To receive grace in vain is to let it sit unused and unfruitful, never bearing the good works that God prepared for us to walk in as a natural result of being saved. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. God is not an angry deity waiting for us to fail — He is the one who commanded light to shine out of darkness and chose to reveal His glory in the face of Jesus Christ, who came full of grace and truth, not condemnation. The fact that Jesus served as the final payment for sin proves that God's nature is salvation, not judgment, and His wrath is reserved only for those who ultimately reject the gift of grace He has freely offered. In His wisdom, God chose to place this extraordinary treasure not in perfect, heavenly vessels but in ordinary, cracked earthen ones — because a perfect vessel would draw glory to itself, while a broken one makes it unmistakably clear that the power belongs to God alone. You Were Never Meant to Be Enough on Your Own 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 NKJV - And we have such trust through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Discipline Restores; It Doesn't Destroy 2 Corinthians 2:6-8 NKJV - This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man, so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. Church discipline, when taken too far, can destroy the very person it was meant to restore — and Paul's correction to the Corinthians was not to abandon accountability but to recognize when punishment has done its work and forgiveness must follow. The purpose of discipline is never to bring hopelessness or overwhelming grief, but to lead a person to repentance; once repentance comes, restoration and love must be reaffirmed without delay. Holiness and love are never at odds — as G. Campbell Morgan put it, love never slights holiness, but holiness never slays love. We are children of God not by birth or right but by adoption, election, and redemption through Jesus alone, which means everything we have received has been freely given, never earned. The comfort Paul describes is not merely a soothing sympathy but a strengthening, stabilizing power — the kind that equips us to stand and then to help others stand as well.
