Glory or Shame

Stop Living in the Rearview Mirror
Philippians 3:12-14 CSB - Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus.
Paul, who had more reasons than almost anyone to either boast in past achievements or be crushed by past failures, chose neither — instead pressing forward in the present moment toward the prize God had set before him. Spiritual maturity is not claiming to have arrived but humbly recognizing we are still in process, being perfected daily by the Holy Spirit in a work that will not be complete until we see Jesus face to face. Living in the rearview mirror — whether in the glory of past victories or the shame of past failures — is a deception that keeps us from what God has for us right now, because a race is won only in the present moment. The call is always forward, always pressing, always trusting that the One who took hold of us will faithfully carry us all the way to the finish line.

The Cure for Conceit Is a Cross-Shaped Life
Philippians 2:3 CSB - Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
Paul's antidote to the conceit and selfish ambition that fractures community is not simply trying harder to be nicer but adopting the very mindset of Christ — who, though equal with God, emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient to the point of death on a cross. In a culture that rewards self-promotion and assertiveness, humility was considered a weakness in ancient Greek society and remains undervalued today — yet it is the very foundation of genuine Christian community. When selfish ambition drives us, other people become tools for our advancement rather than image-bearers worthy of honor — but when we consider others more important than ourselves, something remarkable happens: everyone is looked up to, and no one is looked down on. The cure for conceit is not self-improvement but a cross-shaped life, modeled after the One who had every reason to exalt Himself and chose to serve instead.

On to Completion

Under Construction Until the Day of Christ
Philippians 1:6 CSB - I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Paul's confidence was not in the Philippians' ability to finish well but in the faithfulness of the God who started the work in the first place — and that same confidence is available to every believer who feels unfinished, frustrated, or too slow in their progress. God has never abandoned a half-formed world or walked away from an incomplete creation, and He will not abandon the work He has begun in us. We are under construction — messy, imperfect, and still very much in process — but the One doing the building has promised to see it through to completion until the day we see Jesus face to face. Our job is not to strive our way to completion, but to trust the One who finishes what He starts, resting in the confidence that He is at work even when we cannot see it.
